About Legacies

Michael and Theresa Bittner
Legacies is a non-profit, semi-annual newsletter created to share family history research with all descendents of Michael and Theresa Bittner (above). The first issue was published in July 2000. Legacies is produced in Coon Rapids, Minnesota by Greg and Ruth Bittner, who have been researching the Bittner family since 1998.

Legacies has three goals:

Discovering the origins of the Bittner family (specifically, the birthplaces of Michael and Theresa, which are not yet known) and their European heritage.

Sharing the family history with all living descendents of Michael and Theresa Bittner.

Preserving the family history for the enrichment of all present and future generations.

It is our intention to find all living descendents of Michael and Theresa Bittner. So far, about 130 families have been contacted in the United States and Canada. If you are a family member or you know a family member who does not yet know about Legacies, please contact us for more information. Please also help us spread the word about the August 2002 Bittner reunion to all family members.

A Brief Family History

Michael and Theresa (Baumgartner) Bittner came to the United States from Germany in 1874 and settled in Minden, Iowa, in 1875. In 1885, they moved to Adrian, Nobles County, Minnesota. They had twelve children: Francis ("Frank"), Anna, Elizabeth, Theresa ("Rose"), Wenzel ("Jim"), Mary, Joseph, Franziska ("Francis"), Johan ("Jack"), Henry, Katherine, and Josephine.

Of the twelve branches of Michael and Theresa Bittner's descendents, eight branches survive today. These descendents have the following surnames: Anderson, Avila, Barsi, Bartsch, Beadle, Berger, Bilbrey, Bittner, Brack, Claiborn, Glahn, Harrigan, Harrison, Haubrich, Hayes, Hiel, Hoffman, Hoppe, Johnson, Johnston, Kari, Kaufenberg, Kaufmann, King, Krahnke, Kurk, Landwehr, Larmore, Lentsch, Lockhart, Loeffler, Luna, Matock, McAlpin, McCaul, McClung, McGowan, McIntire, McKasy, Meyer, Mitchell, Mohs, Moore, Neiswenter, Owens, Peterson, Quinlivan, Reinhardt, Rittaler, Roberts, Rubenzer, Russett, Sander, Schiffer, Scurich, Spahn, Stavrindes, Stevenson, Sutliff, Svoboda, Swanson, Swilley, Thompson, Tocko, Trudeau, Vann, Vincent, Watson, Wellicome, Wilkin, Wisbey. (The Bittner name survives in four branches.)
